With over 14 years’ experience, Heleen heads up the RisCura team who provides independent valuations for clients across all alternative asset classes such as (but not limited to) Private Equity, Infrastructure and Private Debt. In this role, she provides assurance to investors in alternative assets and alternative asset funds that their assets are priced correctly. This ensures that clients receive accurate reporting and assessment of returns on investments, which in turn allows them to manage their investments more effectively. She joined RisCura in 2012 and has performed and reviewed over 150 valuations since then. She previously worked as a corporate finance partner at PKF Inc.

J-P joined Metier in 2012, he is a director and head of Investor Relations responsible for the ongoing investor relations management and fund raising with existing and prospective investor groups globally. He completed undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in economics at the Rand Afrikaans University (now the University of Johannesburg). J-P started his career at the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in their 'Class of' programme in 1998. J-P was the head of the JSE's strategy team from 2001 to 2006 and his work included the implementation of various strategic initiatives to foster the development of the stock exchange as a business, which culminated in its listing in 2006. In 2006, J-P was appointed as the CEO of the Southern African Venture Capital and Private Equity Association (SAVCA), where he gained extensive insights into the local and global regulatory, compliance and investor environments for the industry.

John Bellew
John Bellew
Head of Private Equity, Bowmans

He specialises in private equity – fund formation, mergers and acquisitions, management arrangements and acquisition finance. His expertise extends to public market mergers and acquisitions and listings and he has led a number of take private transactions.

John has advised prominent South African and international private equity houses on some of the largest private equity transactions undertaken in the South African and broader African markets. He has represented private equity borrowers and high yield lenders and has formed numerous private equity funds with a focus on South and Sub-Saharan Africa. In recent times he has been involved, on behalf of the South African industry body SAVCA, in various lobbying activities, especially in regard to pension fund participation in private equity funds, taxation and exchange control.

His expertise has been recognised by various international research organizations including Chambers Global (Corporate/ M&A) and Legal 500 (Corporate M&A; Investment Funds; Private Equity).

John was a founder member of the AVCA Legal and Regulatory Committee and is a member of the SAVCA Legal and Regulatory Committee.

He has B.Com and LLB (cum laude) degrees from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and a Diploma in Tax (cum laude) from the University of South Africa.

Albert Alsina

Albert Alsina has more than 25 years of international experience in multi-national settings where he held several executive positions in General Management at global and European levels in the US, UK, Brazil, Germany, Zimbabwe and Spain. In 2007, Albert joined the financial group Riva y García to lead the fund “Fons Mediterrania Capital”. In 2013, he founded Mediterrania Capital Partners Ltd. which today manages two funds: MC II and MC III. Today Albert is a member of the Investment Committee of “Mediterrania Capital II” and “Mediterrania Capital III”, and a Board member of several portfolio companies of Mediterrania Capital Partners’ funds.

Albert is also a member of AVCA’s Sustainability Committee and Associate Professor at EADA Business School in Barcelona. He currently sits on the Board of Anne Fundació, a centre dedicated to medical and psychological attention to children.

Albert is an AMP graduate from Harvard Business School (USA). He completed the Global Leadership Program from Wharton (USA), and PADE from IESE Business School (Spain); he also holds Master’s degrees from Fulda Fachoschule (Germany) and Université de Poitiers (France); and a Bachelor degree in Business from the University of Barcelona (Spain).

Albert is fluent in English, French, German and Portuguese, as well as in Catalan and Spanish.

Joint-CEO, Old Mutual Alternative Investments

Paul has been Head of Alternative Investments since 2004. This boutique is responsible for the group’s investments in infrastructure, private equity, impact investment and mezzanine debt. He chairs the Alternative Assets Investment Committee and has served on the boards of African Infrastructure Investment Managers, Assore, African Clean Energy Development, CIT, J&J, Life Healthcare, Metcash, Mezzanine Partners, Old Mutual Investment Group, Pepkor, Tourvest and Pembani. He also chaired Green Hands, Old Mutual Investment Group’s Social Development Forum, for 10 years.

Paul’s entire career has been involved in investment and capital markets. His previous work experience includes serving articles with Deloitte in Johannesburg where he qualified as a chartered accountant. He then spent 7 years as an investment banker at Investec.

Paul joined Old Mutual in 1995. He spent five years as the Portfolio Manager of the Old Mutual Life Funds (at the time a US$50 billion portfolio and the largest balanced mandate in the country) and three years as Head of Investment Views, formulating the investment house view and model portfolio for Old Mutual Investment Group. Over these periods, the Life Funds and fully discretionary balanced funds, respectively, delivered top quartile performance.
